Funeral for Fallen Guardsman on Tuesday

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. — Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday for Sgt. Thomas C. Ray, one of two members of the North Carolina Army National Guard killed in action in Iraq on March 22.

Ray, 40, of Weaverville, and Sgt. David Blake Williams, 26, of Tarboro, died when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated during his patrol north of Baghdad. Ray was a member of the 1132nd Military Police Company, headquartered in Rocky Mount, conducting operations near Baghdad.

Ray's funeral will be held at 10 a.m. at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave. in Weaverville. He will be buried with full military honors at the Western North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
