GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Funeral arrangements have been set for longtime Wayne County Sheriff Carey A. Winders.

Winders died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home Friday morning.

Family members will greet friends on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church, 1200 West Grantham St., Goldsboro.

A service to celebrate Winders' life will be held Friday at 2 p.m. inside Mount Olive College's Kornegay Arena.

Burial will follow at the Wayne Memorial Park with Sheriff’s Honors provided by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, followed by Masonic Rites.

The celebration and burial was scheduled for Wednesday but has been moved to Friday because of the possibility of snow.

In lieu of gifts, the sheriff's office said memorial flowers may be directed to Union Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church in Freemont or to the Wounded Warrior Project in Fayetteville.

Winders' body will lie in state at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Maj. Fane Greenfield will serve as interim sheriff until county commissioners appoint a permanent replacement to finish Winders' term.
