Freezing rain could fall early Thursday
WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said the possibility for freezing rain is so slight that the National Weather Service has not issued an advisory.
Posted — UpdatedA bright, cold Christmas Day wrapped up with temperatures falling into the 20s and 30s across the region. A trough of low pressure from the north will meet up with moisture from the south to give rise to a bit of rainfall, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.
If temperatures don’t rise overnight, that moisture could freeze.
“This is a tricky system, Maze said. “We have very dry air in place, and as moisture moves into the region, a lot of it may evaporate before it reaches the ground.”
Maze said there’s no need to worry. The potential for freezing rain is so slight that the National Weather Service did not issue an advisory for the area.
“We’ll stress again that this is going to be a very light event. It may just even be sprinkles,” he said.
The forecast calls for light rain that will last through lunchtime before moving off the coast. Thursday’s high is expected to reach 46 degrees.
Conditions will stay dry later Thursday through Saturday night, when heavy rain moves in. More than an inch could fall across central North Carolina from Saturday night to Sunday, Maze said.
