LOUISBURG, N.C. — A 2-year-old boy riding with his grandparents died Wednesday afternoon when a truck broadsided their van along N.C. Highway 98 in Franklin County, state troopers said.

The van was going west on N.C. 98, just west of Sid Eaves Road, while an unloaded tractor-trailer was going east around 3:30 p.m., troopers said.

The truck driver, Robert Dwayne Griffin Jr., 22, of Oxford, said that his brakes locked up, sending the truck off the road. Troopers said that Griffin over-corrected, and his truck traveled left of the center line and hit the side of the van.

The 2-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was killed. His grandparents, Millard Claude Bishop, 67, and Grace Belcher Bishop, 63, both of Youngsville, were taken to Wake Med for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Griffin faces charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving left of center, failure to secure a load and failure to secure a trailer properly.

Troopers said they were looking into preliminary reports that the boy was not properly restrained in the vehicle. The boy was in a car seat, troopers said.
