RALEIGH, N.C. — An aggressive fox that was caught Tuesday in Raleigh after it bit one person and threatened two others has tested positive for rabies, authorities said Wednesday.

Animal control and police officers spent several hours trying to corral the fox Tuesday after it bit a woman in the 1400 block of Courtland Drive, chased another person jogging on Courtland Drive and bit the shoe of a child in the 1400 block of Wake Forest Road.

The jogger and the child were not hurt, but the woman who was bitten said she was receiving shots to ward against rabies.

“I saw a fox and he ran at me, screamed and bit my leg,” the woman, who declined to give her full name, said Tuesday. “I fought him off with a trash can. You have to get shots, but I was just scared for my health. But I am fine, and I will be fine.

Authorities said residents in the area should remain on alert in the coming days in case other aggressive or potentially rabid animals appear.
