— Four seniors at Raleigh's Broughton High School were injured Friday afternoon in a single-car crash on N.C. Highway 4, south of Littleton.

Troopers said driver Anne Crone, 17, ran off the road to the right and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to flip several times. Tessa Jones, 17, and Jane Fountain, 18, who were sitting in the front and rear passenger-side seats, were thrown from the vehicle.

Jones' back was broken, trooper said. She was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and is expected to survive. She was in good condition on Sunday.

Fountain was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where troopers said she was in critical condition.

Grace Barnard, 17, was treated for minor injuries at WakeMed in Raleigh. Crone was treated at the scene.

Broughton principal Steve Mares told WRAL News Sunday that the school will have additional staff on campus Monday to support students.

"With social media and texting, our students have been able to reach out and communicate and visit most of the young ladies and share their love," Mares said in an email. "The girls are athletes, participating in various sports. They are also all outstanding students."

Troopers said they were still investigating the crash but expected to file charges. They said speed and alcohol were not factors. Barnard, Fountain and Jones were not wearing seat belts, troopers said.
