Tighter Fort Bragg security slows traffic around post

Fort Bragg spokesman Adam Luther described the exercise as "random security checks at all gates," but he didn't say what spurred the action.

The crackdown started at about 6:30 a.m., and for a time, traffic was backed up from the Spring Lake gate all the way through town almost to the Linden Oaks development.

However, one Spring Lake resident said the backup had begun by the time he was on the road at 5:20 a.m.

"What normally takes me 10 minutes to get through Ft. Bragg stretched into almost 30 minutes," Ron DesGroseillers wrote in an email to WRAL.

On a normal day, traffic moves smoothly in and out of the post. The additional check slowed progress through all gates.

On Sunday, the FBI issued a warning to all American military personnel to be aware of intelligence that indicates ISIS is tracking individual soldiers in an attempt to identify those who may sympathize with their cause.

That comes on top of an October warning that ISIS may attempt attacks on U.S. soil against law enforcement personnel and members of the news media.

Fort Bragg representatives declined to connect the security move to the recent warning. 

"There has not been any threats made to the installation," Luther said.

By 9:30 a.m., the restriction appeared to have been lifted and traffic was moving smoothly.
