— Three Fort Bragg soldiers were awarded Purple Heart medals in a ceremony at the post Wednesday.

Capt. Shawn Jokinen, Sgt. 1st Class Juan Cando and Staff Sgt. Arnulfo Benitez of the 98th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) were given the honor for their service in Afghanistan.

The men were wounded during a roadside bom attack on their vehicle on Jan. 3, according to military officials. The men were part of a convoy conducting a humanitarian assistance mission to a village in Khowst Province near the Pakistan border.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
