FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier and his wife had an extra special reason to celebrate on New Year's Day.

Travis and Andria Watson welcomed a baby girl, Symantha Michelle Watson, at 12:23 a.m. Thursday – the first baby born this year at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Symantha weighed 6 pounds and was about 19 inches long. She's the couple's first child.

"She was three weeks early," Andria Watson said with a laugh. "She was supposed to come on the 22nd, so she came on her own time."

At WakeMed in Raleigh, Samuel Matos was born at 12:20 a.m. to Jacqueline Pereira-Najera and Ruben Matos.

At Rex Hospital in Raleigh, the first baby of the year arrived at 1:50 a.m.

In Durham, Duke University Hospital welcomed the first baby of 2015 just after 8 a.m.
