Fort Bragg soldier who deployed 10 times dies in off-post residence

A Fort Bragg soldier from Pennsylvania died Wednesday in his off-post residence, base officials announced Friday.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier from Pennsylvania died Wednesday in his off-post residence, base officials announced Friday.

Sgt. 1st Class Grant Shanaman, of Media, Pa., was an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper and served 10 combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Sgt. 1st Class Grant Shanaman was an American paratrooper, a combat veteran, and a selfless servant to our nation," said Col. Pat Work, commander of the 2nd BCT. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time." 

Shanaman joined the Army in June 1998. His 18-year career included more than 11 years with the 75th Ranger Regiment.  He was serving as a brigade operations non-commissioned officer at the time of his death.

Details surrounding his death were not immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.
