Fort Bragg paratrooper dies in training

An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper died during physical training at Fort Bragg, the military announced Friday.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — The death of an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper who died Wednesday during physical training at Fort Bragg is under investigation, the U.S. Army announced Friday.

Master Sgt. Eldridge Jackson served as the first sergeant of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team.

An Alabama native, he joined the Army in 1988 and served as an artilleryman. His numerous deployments included two to Iraq and, most recently, one to Afghanistan.

Among his many awards, Jackson received three Bronze Stars, three Meritorious Service Medals, several Army Commendation Medals, eight Army Achievement Medals, a Valorous Unit Award, seven Army Good Conduct medals, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, Air Assault Wings and the Master Parachutist Badge.

Jackson is survived by his mother, Jeraldine Whipple, of Dothan, Ala.
