Fort Bragg paratrooper dies after auto wreck

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg has died from injuries he suffered in a car wreck, the U.S. Army announced Monday.

Pfc. Ryan C. Heffernan, 19, of Camp Hill, Penn., was an infantryman with 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

He died Sunday in Harrisburg, officials said.

Heffernan joined the Army in September 2009 and reported to the 82nd Airborne in March 2010. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron., 73rd Cavalry Regiment in April 2010.

In his Army career, Heffernan had received several awards and decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.
