FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Ask any Army cook, and they will tell you what it takes to feed an army.

But when Thanksgiving dinner is served up at Fort Bragg, it’s a labor of love.

“We’ve been here since last night trying to ensure that the soldiers get the best meals, because a lot of soldiers aren’t able to go home for Thanksgiving,” Fort Bragg Staff Sgt. Calephia Thompson said Tuesday.

Some parts of preparing a great meal are painstakingly slow. Spc. Nicole Miller has sliced more than 200 cases of tomatoes.

“Been doing this all night and yesterday,” Miller said. “Doing more today. The boxes are endless. They just keep coming and coming.”

The kitchen scramble is happening all over the post. It’s a competition to be the best dining facility at Fort Bragg.

So, what’s on the menu?

“Steamship round with our roast beef with an au jus sauce,” Spc. First Class Anthony Molten said. “We’re going to have rolled turkey and whole turkey. We’re going to have ham.”

Many of the soldiers who can’t make it home for Thanksgiving just got back from combat zones. Knowing that pushes the cooks to make sure the meal is extra special.

Sgt. Bryant Morrisey’s voice is filled with pride when he talks about the meal preparations.

“I’m from the South, so I love to do it,” he said.
