CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A former assistant coach of the University of North Carolina fencing team was charged Wednesday in a sexual assault last month, according to police reports.

Joseph Marion Pipkin, 24, of Carrboro, surrendered to police and was charged with sexual battery. The charge stems from a Nov. 18 assault in an alley off East Franklin Street, according to police reports.

Pipkin, a former member of the UNC fencing team, served as an assistant coach of the team for one year after his 2008 graduation, officials said.
