— A former assistant coach of the University of North Carolina fencing team was charged Wednesday in a sexual assault last month, according to police reports.

Joseph Marion Pipkin, 24, of Carrboro, surrendered to police and was charged with sexual battery. The charge stems from a Nov. 18 assault in an alley off East Franklin Street, according to police reports.

Pipkin, a former member of the UNC fencing team, served as an assistant coach of the team for one year after his 2008 graduation, officials said.

I think it's amusing how everyone posting is caught up in the sport, the school, his race and not the issue at hand...He is accused of SEXUAL BATTERY. *ahem*

Just another way for the news to sensationalize a story. My thoughts are with the victim and if he is guilty, I hope that he is punished to the fullest extent of the law, UNC degree or not.

Tolip....Fencing is a family of sports and activities that feature armed combat involving cutting, stabbing, or bludgeoning weapons that are directly manipulated by hand, rather than shot, thrown or positioned. Examples include swords, knives, pikes, bayonets, batons, clubs, and similar weapons.

I was late signing up for the required freshman PE at NCSU back in 1978 and there was nothing left but fencing. Not one of the more productive uses of my time, but at least it's one course I did manage to pass!

So they now teach fencing at UNC? Great! That is a skill which will always be needed! A well rounded knowledge of concrete, quick set and regular, posts, cedar and locust, as well as aluminum and vinyl coatings! I sure they meant "professor" instead of "coach"! :>P
