— The person charged with setting fire to a West End Boy Scout lodge is a former scout, a Moore County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

Aaron Jaymes Lee, 17, of 103 Sandspur Lane, was arrested Saturday and charged with burning a church, two counts of setting fire to a wooded area and two counts of misuse of 911.

Authorities linked him to a July 1 fire near the intersection of Sandspur Lane and Edgewater Drive in the Seven Lakes community; an Aug. 17 fire at 3164 Carthage Road on property owned by West End United Methodist Church and used by the Boy Scouts; and false reports of fires on Aug. 15 and Aug. 22.

The church building was considered a total loss with an estimated $400,000 in damages.

Lee was held on $50,000 secured bond. He has a court appearance scheduled for Sept. 10.

It's a shame how many arsonists are volunteer firefighters. Although they usually tend to set small fires... dumpsters and such.

That's about the age folks become arsonists. Usually late teens-early 20's white males - FBI records.

Only about 3% of new scouts become Eagle Scouts. It's tough and many do not make it,-or they get distracted by other things-normally fumes-perfume and gasoline.

There's more to this story than we know. Let's hope this young man can straighten his life out. Hopefully, the insurance covers the loss for the church.

Not only is a former scout, but he's also a volunteer fireman or firefighter trainee....guess he wanted some additional action. He's been in trouble before, too bad, he had potential, but hangs out with the wrong people.
