— A former Kinston City Council member who pleaded guilty to a federal child pornography charge in April was sentenced Thursday to 6½ years in prison, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

William Walter Barker, 44, was also ordered to serve a lifetime of probation after he is released from prison and pay a $10,000 fine.

According to investigators, a USB drive containing sexually explicit images and other documents was found in Fremont Town Hall last year. Barker had attended a Board of Aldermen meeting to discuss the town audit, which his firm conducted, and the USB drive was found near where he had been sitting, authorities said.

Authorities linked the USB drive to Barker, and a search of his Kinston home turned up more than 11,000 images and 1,000 videos of child pornography on a laptop computer, authorities said.

I guess he will not do that again.

I wish all the "who's who of Kinston" (as the local paper described it) who showed up to support him had chosen instead to support the victims of his crime. Once again, a proper Kinston family gets off easy. If it had been a nobody, he'd have gotten the full 20 years. He'll be out in 2-3 years probably. How long will it take for the poor kids on his USB drive to recover?
