Former first lady of Raleigh has died

Marguerite Lightner was the wife of Clarence Lightner, who served as Raleigh mayor from 1973 through 1975.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The wife of Raleigh's first African-American mayor has died.

Marguerite Lightner was 84. She died at her home Thursday night. Lightner had been ill for some time, her son said.

Marguerite Lightner was the wife of Clarence Lightner, who served as Raleigh mayor from 1973 through 1975. He died in 2002, at age 80.

According to her son, Lightner was unable to attend the annual youth awards banquet that bears her husband's name, and she died shortly after the event in downtown Raleigh ended.

Visitation for Lightner will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. followed by the funeral at  Davie Street Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Davie St. in Raleigh.
