A former fifth-grade teacher at Creedmoor Elementary School in Granville County Schools was in court Wednesday for a first appearance hearing after being charged last week with statutory rape of male student with whom she allegedly had a sexual relationship.

Megan Selfe, 25, was arrested by the Granville County Sheriff's office after she turned herself in Feb. 6.

She told the judge Wednesday that she did not need a court-appointed attorney because she has already hired her own. She declined comment.

Jesse Scharff, her attorney, said Selfe is unemployed and living with her parents in Pennsylvania.

"She's a kind-hearted person (who's) under a lot of stress," Scharff said. "We're looking forward to her day in court. I'm looking forward to looking at the investigative notes so that we can prepare a defense for her. I believe in her. She comes from a great family and we're going to do our best to work hard for her."

Selfe is charged with one felony count of statutory rape of a child less than or equal to the age of 15 and one felony count of indecent liberties with a child.

"From the beginning of the investigation, Ms. Selfe has been cooperative," Scharff said. "She's met repeatedly with investigators. She's given statements."

According to Granville County Sheriff Brindell Wilkins, the charges are in reference to only one child, but it is believed the sexual conduct happened more than once with that student.

Selfe was a fifth-grade teacher from January 2016 to July 2016, when she resigned.

She taught the child with whom she is alleged to have had the relationship; that child would have been 10 or 11 years old at the time. The child would now be 12 or 13 years old.

Warrants show the rape happened sometime in January of 2017.

Selfe had no prior charges on her record before her arrest, Wilkins said.

Wiborne said Granville County Schools would assist law enforcement to help in the investigation.

"We follow our policies and our procedures to the letter, and we feel like those provide a strong layer of protection," Winborne said to The Daily Dispatch. "We're always trying to be vigilant in making sure that our kids are safe."

After leaving Creedmoor, Selfe went to teach at Henderson Collegiate Elementary, where she worked from July 1, 2016 to Jan. 10, 2018. Eric Sanchez, executive director at the school, said the woman was terminated in January after law enforcement authorities approached them about their investigation.

The official said he has no reason to believe students at Henderson Collegiatel were victimized. The school sent a letter home to parents on Feb. 8 to advise them of the school's actions.

“Based on what we have been informed by law enforcement, we don’t consider this a Henderson Collegiate manner," the letter said. "We have worked with the Granville Sheriff’s Office, and we have faith that with the cooperation of Granville County Schools, they will effectively handle this situation in the best interest of the kids.”
