FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A former unpaid assistant basketball coach at Pine Forest High School in Fayetteville was charged Monday with two counts of statutory sex offense of a 14-year-old boy.

According to authorities, Rodney Scott, 50, of the 2300 block of Vestal Avenue, is accused of sexually assaulting a child Sunday night inside his home.

According to Ruben Reyes, the Cumberland County Schools superintendent of human resources, Scott volunteered as a boys’ varsity basketball assistant coach at Pine Forest from 2013 to January 2016. He also worked as a safe schools coordinator at Pine Forest from August 2011 to June 2013, and as a substitute teacher from 1997 to 2010.

According to Scott's mother, he has also been a foster parent for several young boys and a coach of a boys’ basketball team that plays in a Christian basketball league.

"After interviews, we felt that we had enough to do a search warrant at (Scott's) residence," said Lt. John Somerindyke. "As a result of the search warrant and the interview with the doctor and the 14-year-old victim, we were able to draw warrants for two counts of statutory sex offense that happened at his residence."

Police say there may be additional victims.

"This could open the door to some further charges, with not only this victim, but it is possible that others may come forward," Somerindyke said.

Scott was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $100,000 secured bond.
