<b>DURHAM, N.C.</b> — A former Durham police officer has been charged with misdemeanor simple assault, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

Sheree Lee Bekhet was arrested after an altercation on Englewood Avenue Jan. 6, Michael said.

Bekhet resigned in May 2008 from her post as secondary employment coordinator. She had worked for the department since December 1991.
