Former Cumberland County DA dies after short illness

Former Cumberland County District Attorney Ed Grannis died early Thursday after a short illness, family members told WRAL News.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Former Cumberland County District Attorney Ed Grannis died early Thursday after a short illness, family members told WRAL News.

Family members said Grannis became ill last week and died Thursday morning.

Grannis, 72, joined the district attorney's office in 1970 and was elected DA in 1974. He retired in 2010 after winning re-election nine times.

Friends and family will gather to remember Grannis Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sullivan Funeral Home on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville.

A funeral service is scheduled for Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church near Bow and Anne Streets in Fayetteville.
