PITTSBORO, N.C. — A former secretary and treasurer at Northwood High School is accused of taking more than $81,000 from the school, authorities said Friday.

Karen Burnette Cheek, of the 100 block of Lesters Way in Moncure, is charged with six counts of embezzlement.

During a routine audit in 2013, Chatham County school officials discovered missing funds and notified Pittsboro police. The policed enlisted the help of the State Bureau of Investigation, and the agencies determined more than $100,000 was embezzled from the school since 2008. Cheek was employed at the school during that time.

Investigators believe Cheek took a total of $81,017.32. She was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond and has a first court appearance May 18.
