Former Brunswick County sheriff dies in jail

Wilmington, N.C. — A former Brunswick County sheriff died Saturday afternoon while in custody at the New Hanover County Detention Facility.
Ronald Emery Hewett died around 2 p.m., according to the sheriff's office.
He was being held at the jail after several firearms were found at his home in Supply on Wednesday.
Hewett pleaded guilty in 2008 to one count of obstruction of justice and was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
The former sheriff faced a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if he was convicted on the firearms charge.
Hewett served as Brunswick County sheriff for 14 years.
