— A former teacher at Broughton High School has been charged with a sex crime involving a student, Wake County Public School System officials confirmed Saturday.

Ronald Lee Chewning, 25, of 5323 Hidden Dove Lane, #105, Raleigh, is charged with sex offense with a student. He was arrested on Greens Dairy Road in Raleigh.

Lisa Luten, a spokeswoman for the school system, said Chewning resigned from his position on Feb 3, prior to his arrest.

"All our staff uphold an obligation to report any possible information we may have about this charge. We have and will continue to fully comply with that obligation," Luten said in a statement. "We are currently conducting an internal investigation of the incident, along with cooperating fully with Raleigh Police Department's investigation."

Chewning was a career and technical education teacher at the downtown Raleigh school, which is home to more than 2,000 students.

"Please know that we take the safety of students very seriously. Guidance counselors are available to students who need support," Luten said.

The quoted comment is the general statute for indecent liberties with a student. I wonder how long it's been on the books and how it's exercised. I had no idea my mom was a criminal! She and my father met when she was his adjunct professor in graduate school with just over 4 years in age difference at 29 and 24. And for all those making assumptions, my dad was the 24 year old. I don't know how much experience you have with those in the 18-28 year old range, but these days, there is very little difference in maturity levels!

Many years ago, first year out of college ~22 years old, I was a NC high school teacher and coach. An athlete in great shape, told by many a "handsome guy", etc., etc., I was shocked by the blatant, open, not at all subtle ways in which high school girls (ages 14-18) truly "threw themselves" at me. Some were very direct and explicit in stating what they wanted to do to me and/or with me. Many of those girls were very attractive and even some of the 14-15 year olds could have passed for college-aged girls. Was all of that "tempting"... absolutely! But... I knew that just one move - just to "first base" - with one of those girls and my career aspirations were GONE... never to be realized. I had to work incredibly hard to avoid mere suspicion. Even as hard as I worked at doing that... if another teacher or parent had heard what some of those girls were saying about me.... I'd have been in BIG trouble - albeit 100% INNOCENT! Don't judge too quickly!

@50SCHILD That's a pretty sick view. Are you seriously insinuating this guy was seduced by a student? Really?!? Even if that was the case, he could have, you know, acted like an adult. Which apparently he is incapable of doing. Please take your witchhunt elsewhere.

I'm a native. And Broughton alumna. I'm so sick of Raleigh assigning geographic presence as they see fit. Wake Forest is now part of city limits called Wakefield. Brier Creek is Durham with a Raleigh zip. Broughton is now downtown.

This man is trash. Hope they throw book at him. No matter where Broughton is located lol.
