A former Fort Bragg soldier was found not guilty Tuesday in the shooting death of a Fayetteville man two years ago.

Brandon Joseph Mims, 22, was charged with murder in the Jan. 29, 2011, death of 22-year-old Michael Ray Staggs.

Someone fired a shotgun into Staggs' car in the parking lot of a strip shopping center at Bonanza Drive and Morganton Road.

Mims, who was in the Army at the time, was arrested three days later in Key West, Fla., but prosecutors were able to link him to the crime only through circumstantial evidence.
