Former Alorton mayor and wife accused of illegal dumping

Junk is everywhere, but its is not a real dump.

It's a Metro East neighborhood and an elected leader is accused of being at fault.

The Alorton property's owned by former village mayor Randy McCallum and his wife, Gwen, a current village trustee.

"Fairview Heights, Belleville, O'Fallon, you don't see stuff like this," said Alorton Chief Code Enforcer Anthony LeFlore

"What's most disturbing is Randy McCallum is the one that implemented the ordinances back in 2006," said LeFlore.

The lot is located directly across from another property the McCallums are renting to a family where the backyard is overrun with litter now mixed in with wood and nails after the garage collapsed.

"I'm not a slumlord, I'm a landlord," said Alorton Village Trustee Gwen McCallum.

McCallum tells News 4 she and her husband are working with the renters to clean up the unsightly mess, but not because of the city's efforts.

"I have not received any letters from city hall stating that I have any problems with any of my houses," said McCallum.

News 4 obtained copies of both notices code enforcement sent to the McCallums, but the couple claims the department should take a look at their own employees.

McCallum said the homes of several Alorton Code Enforcement staffers don't meet village requirements.

Alorton Chief Code Enforcer LeFlore believes there's been enough finger pointing.

"They need to step up to the plate and do the right thing," said LeFlore.

LeFlore tells News 4 the McCallums have until Thursday to comply with the village's ordinance.

If not, they'll face a fine of up to $750 for each property.

In regards to the issues News 4 saw on Alorton Code Enforcement employees' properties, News 4 couldn't get a comment from the village.
