APEX, N.C. — Police said a 22-year-old Apex man was driving drunk Wednesday morning when he lost control of his Ford F-350 pickup truck and crashed into a transformer and two homes in the Dogwood Ridge neighborhood.

Apex officers responded to the neighborhood, which is off of Olive Chapel Road, at about 2:45 a.m.

According to investigators, William Tyler Mayhew lost control of his truck, struck a transformer, clipped one home and crashed through the living room and kitchen of a second home on Silky Dogwood Trail. No one was hurt.

The truck came to rest inside the bottom floor of the second home. Three passengers were inside at the time of the wreck.

The wreck knocked out power to several homes in the area, and authorities also had to fix a gas leak caused by the truck.

A woman was asleep inside the second home when it was hit by the truck. She told WRAL News that she woke up after hearing the truck crash through her living room. The woman, who did not want to give her name, said she went outside after smelling gas and seeing smoke.

Her cat, which was downstairs when the truck barreled through the exterior wall, went missing after the crash but was found by Wednesday evening.

Dogwood Ridge property manager Ron Fincher said his company is working with Apex Baptist Church to help the tenants of the two homes find somewhere to stay.

"Neighbors have opened up their homes to her," he said of the woman. "(They have) banded together and are going to help."

Fincher said he's thankful no one was hurt – and he's angry about "the foolishness" that led to incident.

The truck was removed shortly before 8 a.m., and power and gas were restored quickly to all but the two affected homes.

Mayhew was charged with driving while intoxicated, hit-and-run, speeding and careless and reckless driving, Apex police said. According to investigators, he went to his home on nearby Purple Glory Drive following the wreck.
