Food Lion merging with Ahold stores

Posted June 24, 2015

Delhaize, the Belgium-based parent company of Food Lion, is merging with Netherlands-based Ahold. The $29 billion deal will create the third largest grocery chain in the United States, behind Kroger and Albertons.

Delhaize owns the Food Lion and Hannaford chains and Ahold owns Stop & Shop, Giant and Martin’s. Together they total 2,000 stores.

What does this mean for Food Lion shoppers? That remains to be seen. The deal is expected to be finalized in 2016. Ahold stores double coupons and allow coupon stacking in US stores, so maybe Food Lion will offer more generous coupon policies.

SomeRandomGuy- I agree - especially if FL begins doubling coupons and allows stacking as Ahold stores do.

bparrish004 - I couldn't agree more. My guess is that they will continue to be strong supporters of the local food banks since it is such a big part of their philosophy.

ascherer - here is the ranking I was referring to:

This could be interesting, AHOLD is the top rated store in Europe.

It is surprising the ranking you mentioned. In the DC area Giant is better than Food Lion. The Food Lions we have in Cary I would rank higher than the Giants up here in DC. I guess it depends on what options are available to you. I believe there are only 3 or 4 HTs in the Northern VA and DC area. So options are limited.

Food Lion is a big supporter of the NC Food Bank & through that relationship, Food Lion stores
partner with local non-profit food pantry's to provide items from the deli/bakery, meat dept & produce dept which would normally just get tossed out. Our local food pantry is a partner with a Food Lion store where we go 4 times per week to pick up these items. It helps us be able to provide more food to those in need. Hope this merger won't have an impact on food bank support . . .

    Hope it's good.

ascherer - I have shopped Giant before in PA as well. The Ahold stores generally rank lower on the best grocery store lists and the Ahold CEO will be the CEO of both companies after the merger. Will be interesting to see what direction FL heads after the merger. Have a good week in DC. :-)

I was wondering if you were going to mention this merger. I read about it today in the Washington Post. Giant is one of the primary shopping stores in the DC area.
