Flu deaths continue to decline in NC

Posted March 13, 2014

A new study shows healthy children benefit from flu vaccines.

— The number of flu deaths in North Carolina continued to decline last week, with only one new death being reported, according to data released Thursday by the state Department of Health and Human Services.

A total of 86 North Carolina residents have died of flu since the annual season began in October.

Flu season normally peaks during January and February.

Adults ages 25 to 64 continue to be most affected, accounting for 62 deaths statewide. Nineteen people 65 or older have died of flu, as have one infant and four other children under the age of 18.

A year ago, 59 people died from flu-related symptoms during the six-month flu season that runs from early October to mid-May. Adults ages 65 or older accounted for 36 of the 59 deaths in 2012-13, and nobody under 18 died from the flu.

The best protection against the flu is a flu shot, which is available for anyone 6 months old or older. It takes at least two weeks to build up a full immunity against the virus.

Hand-washing, coughing into your sleeve and keeping a safe distance from people with flu symptoms are practical ways to help prevent the spread of the flu.

Ignorance is the cornerstone of humanity, also freedom and free will for what makes YOUR way the proper way for others?,you want others to be just like you?,sorry jow blow isn't just like you they are they or as someone once said "I am that I am"..i.e. I AM EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE.
The flow ends so stop going with the flow and believing in the majority just like everyone else and let people be themselves.
Think and live outside the box.

If only there were a shot to cure ignorance. But then again, because they read somewhere on the internet that an ignorant shot could kill you, the ignorant wouldn't get one anyway. Evidently, you can't fix stupid is about the only quote online that's true.

Because the winter season is almost over..DUUUUUHHHHH!!!.
Go back to school and stop listening to these health scammers.I have never gotten a flu shot and didn't get a cold or flu at all this past winter even when I was up north under feet of snow in a sweater.
I have never taken an aspirin or ibuprofen or gotten a headache.
Propaganda scammers...Oh wait the global lunatics are peeking around the corner waiting for the weather to heat up,watch out y'all.

for those who decide FOR THEMSELVES that the flu shot is unnecessary, I SO hope you are staying home when you get sick and not sharing. Personally I WILL continue to get the shot as even if I get it and still get the flu it WON'T be as severe.....but ya'll go ahead

It's probably because people have always died, and will continue to be impacted by the flu, no matter if the vaccine was taken or not. Flu viruses change every year. There are people who die from complications from the COLD every year too, but you don't hear about those, because they aren't pushing a vaccine.

That's because most who died probably did receive the flu vaccine. More proof that it's not needed especially considering the fact it contains mercury.

I got the shot and still got the flu. I would be very interested in seeing those numbers.

I have asked and asked that question to no avail. I have 'heard' on the news that the deaths were across both groups, but you're correct-it would be good info to know and might even quiet the naysayers, doubtful but maybe ;)

Does WRAL have (or can it get) the data on the number of folks who died from the flu and were or were not vaccinated. This seems like a piece of data most would like to see but it is never reported. thanks,
