— The state Highway Patrol says a Florida man was killed in a wreck on Interstate 95 at mile marker 72, near Dunn.

Troopers said a tractor-trailer carrying a shipping container hit the overpass at about 4 p.m. Wednesday on the southbound lanes near Spring Branch Road.

The container was ripped off the truck.  A Dodge Caliber hit the container and the car's driver, Stephen Henry Schwarts, 66, of Bradenton, Fla., was killed, troopers said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, James Proveaux, 45, of Cordova, S.C., was not injured. Troopers said he would be charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and having an over-height vehicle.

A truck used to haul vehicles also hit the container. That truck's driver, Freddy Green, 41, was treated and released from Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital.

The wreck caused major traffic delays.

The overpass was to be inspected by engineers Thursday morning to ensure it's safe before traffic is allowed to cross it.

You would think that if the bridge was only 13'9" that there in no way a trailer at 14' would fit under it

I went past this on my way home yesterday. This SO didn't have to happen. It's within a very well marked low bridge zone with detectors at each end and a marked detour. I wonder if it was worth the very few minutes he was trying to save to have taken another's life needlessly. So sorry for the family of the deceased and others involved in this totally unnecessary wreck. It was horrible.

My prayers go out to his family.

What I think that needs to be looked at too. There are Over Height sensors along that area on 95. I would really like to know why the driver was not identified by the system along there that his load was over the height allowed.
