DUNN, N.C. — The state Highway Patrol says a Florida man was killed in a wreck on Interstate 95 at mile marker 72, near Dunn.

Troopers said a tractor-trailer carrying a shipping container hit the overpass at about 4 p.m. Wednesday on the southbound lanes near Spring Branch Road.

The container was ripped off the truck.  A Dodge Caliber hit the container and the car's driver, Stephen Henry Schwarts, 66, of Bradenton, Fla., was killed, troopers said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, James Proveaux, 45, of Cordova, S.C., was not injured. Troopers said he would be charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and having an over-height vehicle.

A truck used to haul vehicles also hit the container. That truck's driver, Freddy Green, 41, was treated and released from Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital.

The wreck caused major traffic delays.

The overpass was to be inspected by engineers Thursday morning to ensure it's safe before traffic is allowed to cross it.
