JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A Florida man died Sunday along Interstate 95 in Johnston County, and a driver from Virginia is charged in the death.

According to state police, Jason Hite had pulled over just south of the Interstate 40 interchange and was out of his car on the shoulder when Dana Rodgers Jr., 77, swerved out of the path of traffic and hit him.

Rodgers faces charges of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to maintain lane control.

Troopers said Hite's fiancee, Kathleen Sousa, and two children were in his car. They were taken to WakeMed with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Rodgers and the passenger in his car were unhurt.
