Flash flooding causes sinkhole in Fayetteville neighborhood
Flash flooding in Fayetteville Sunday evening caused a sinkhole to form in a neighborhood street in the western part of the city.
Posted — UpdatedCity maintenance workers said Monday that they hope to have repairs on the 6-foot-deep hole on Welsh Place in the Cottonade neighborhood complete by Tuesday.
Until then, a stretch of the road remains closed.
George Maracek, who lives in the neighborhood, said about 18 inches of water was in the road at one point.
Fayetteville police said they received no reports of property damage.
Floodwater quickly receded after Sunday's storm, which dropped nearly 2.5 inches of rain on parts of Fayetteville, forcing some streets, including Cliffdale and Morganton roads, to close. Flooding was also reported on Santa Fe Drive at Yadkin Road.
But there were no reports of injuries.
Flooding was also reported in Hoke County, which saw up to 4 inches of rain in some parts.
Officials there also said Monday that they received no reports of serious damage.
