RALEIGH, N.C. — Fire engulfed a house on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh Saturday evening, displacing a couple and three children, police said.

No one was injured when flames erupted at 905 New Bern Avenue, near Idlewild Avenue, around 7 p.m., but the house was destroyed.

Lisa Finch said she, her children, all aged 3 and under, and her children's father have lived in the home for three years. They escaped out a back window.

"My kids were playing in the front room and then there was smoke. We just grabbed the kids and left," she said. "We tried getting out the font door, but it wasn't possible."

The cause of the fire was under investigation, police said.

The Red Cross is putting up the displaced family in a hotel.
