DAVIDSON, N.C. — Weekly newspapers serving customers in five towns in Wake and Johnston counties will close their doors on Aug. 1, Civitas Media announced Wednesday.

Readers will no longer have access to the print or online editions of the Fuquay-Varina Independent, Garner News, Holly Springs Sun, Cleveland Post and Apex Herald.

Civitas Media's CEO Michael Bush said the Triangle-area suburban papers don't fit into the company's business model.

"Our core business is focused on developing community news and information portals in areas that are predominantly rural and would not be served well otherwise," Bush said in a statement.

The company on Wednesday also announced the impending closures of three similar publications in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Civitas Media will offer employment to 12 people impacted by Wednesday's announcement.
