Five Triangle weekly newspapers closing in August

Posted July 18, 2013

— Weekly newspapers serving customers in five towns in Wake and Johnston counties will close their doors on Aug. 1, Civitas Media announced Wednesday.

Readers will no longer have access to the print or online editions of the Fuquay-Varina Independent, Garner News, Holly Springs Sun, Cleveland Post and Apex Herald.

Civitas Media's CEO Michael Bush said the Triangle-area suburban papers don't fit into the company's business model.

"Our core business is focused on developing community news and information portals in areas that are predominantly rural and would not be served well otherwise," Bush said in a statement.

The company on Wednesday also announced the impending closures of three similar publications in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Civitas Media will offer employment to 12 people impacted by Wednesday's announcement.

This is a shame. They have been a part of those towns for so long. Everything is either closing or getting closed out!

I have a family member who is an editor for a daily paper in the pacific NW. His publisher has told him that they are moving towards community bloggers for local content and then run AP stories for national stuff. Not sure if this is the right solution but I'm doubtful the direction will be changed. A shame indeed.

I hate to see this happen to the little guys. They usually give the most unbiased reporting. Why couldn't it happen to the Raleigh paper instead? They are nothing but a liberal mouth piece like most of the networks.

"I love reading a newspaper. It truly is an enjoyable practice but I just could not stomach the liberalism and lies being printed." -JAFOinWF

This has to be the most ironic comment of the day. You really must be hardcore when you call your CIVITAS rag liberal lies!

If the papers are viable why don't they sell them?

News moves at the speed of lightning. You want Fuquay News...go on facebook, twitter, etc. Or, just go on wral.com - or how about FV's own town website...? The FV Independent was redundant at best. Sorry anyone has to lose a job, though...that stinks.
