— Three adults and two children were injured Thursday morning in a wreck in Johnston County, according to the state Highway Patrol.

A 1995 Ford van was eastbound on Lake Wendell Road shortly after 8 a.m. when one of the tires blew out, Trooper J.L. Thorpe said. The van went off the right side of the road, hit a ditch and overturned, he said.

Four adults and four children were in the van, and three adults, a 12-year-old boy and and an 8-year-old girl were taken to WakeMed for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Thorpe said.

Monique Atkinson, 28, of 130-B Halton Lane in Selma, was charged with driving with a revoked license, having unsafe tires, a child restraint violations and two counts each of felony child abuse and misdemeanor child abuse. She was being held Thursday in the Johnston County jail under a $55,000 bond.

Atkinson was the mother of all four children, none of whom was properly restrained in the van, Thorpe said.

People, take the time to properly restrain your kids. She was blessed that they are ok.

not poor parenting but LACK OF BEING A RESPONSIBLE PARENT IS MORE THE CASE HERE. The economy is no excuse for putting ones children in a dangerous situation.

$20 says four kids by four different dads.

Let's not bring the poor economy into this one! As a mother, I always ensure the safety of my girls and of course, myself...car restraints and yes, safe tires!!! That was just poor laziness and lack of good parenting.

I don't know this woman or her circumstances, but until I hear differently I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. The economy is in the toilet and new tires cost more money than a lot of people have right now. I have no idea why she was driving without a license, but I'm glad all of them and especially the kids will be ok.

What a terrible thing. She is an unfit mother of four. That is so sad. I make sure that any child that gets in my vehicle is properly buckled. If this was more serious, it would eat her up for the rest of her life.
