New fitness course opens in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill has a new fitness course thanks to a collaboration between the town and Southern Village.

The course is found along the greenway in Southern Community Park and is designed for all ages. It includes an air walker, single skier, sit up bench, fitness bike, row machine and other pieces. The $20,000 project was funded by the Town of Chapel Hill, which received half of the funding from the Southern Village Homeowners Association, Market Street Association, Southern Village Apartments and Hyatt Place, according to a press release.

“The fitness trail allows an individual to engage in low impact exercises as they walk along the park’s greenway system," said Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Director Jim Orr in the release.

The equipment can be used in a variety of ways by adults and children. It is open to the public and free to use.

You'll find it along the southern portion of the Fan Branch Trail and greenway. It begins at the trail head at Scrogg’s Elementary School and continues into Southern Community Park and around the multi-use soccer fields.

Southern Community Park is at 1000 Sumac Rd., Chapel Hill. To access the fitness course, you can park in either of the two lots at the park: one off Sumac Road at the park's main entrance and another off Dogwood Acres Drive.
