— A fisherman died Tuesday when his boat capsized in a pond in Moore County, authorities said.

Two men were in the boat when it capsized just after 1 p.m. in the pond at 365 Bibey Road, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said.

Darriet Deon Patterson told authorities that Darell Marquis Kelly tried to stand up in the boat while they were fishing, causing the boat to sink.

Patterson said he swam to shore but lost sight of Kelly.

Divers recovered the body of Kelly, 26, of Southern Pines, from the pond.

We can armchair quarterback all day, but the fact is a man is dead. He could've been a Navy Seal who got cramps and drowned. So many people quick to judge. What we should be doing is thinking of his family and the family of his friend who had to watch his friend drown.

csellers01 - Please think before you comment. Also, please try to put yourself in the shoes of the other person and try to understand what he is going through right now. I can promise you he tried to help. He swam to shore and ran to get help at a nearby house. I know both of the men involved and I can tell you that it's hard enough without your comments. Please keep those to yourself until you get the facts of the story.

More important, why were they NOT wearing life jackets???? I see on the news so many people drown when they are fishing due to drowning but no one is wearing lifevests. This is so sad. That man maybe alive today if he had one on....God bless his family during this horrible time.

Csellers01, it's very likely that we would have been reading about 2 fishermen drowning in a Moore county pond instead of one.

csellers01, it's very hard to save a drowning person. they will pull you down with them, and you both will die. your best bet is to get to the shore and call for help.
