Sunday brings drier, warmer weather

The wet weather fell short of the widespread heavy downpours that forecasters originally anticipated. Though Sunday will be warmer and drier, skies will remain overcast with some pockets of fog through the morning hours.

"We'll have more clouds than sun in the afternoon," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss. "We could see a stray shower or thunderstorm on a highly scattered basis."

Showers will be hit-or-miss around the Triangle, but the mountain and foothills can expect to see some significant rainfall.

Temperatures were in the 60s much of the day Saturday, about 15 degrees off the late-August norm. "This is just outrageous for the middle of August in this part of the country," said WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel.

"Sunday will feel a lot more like summer," Fishel added. "We expect temperatures into the 80s and the humidity will continue to rise throughout the day." 

The work week brings a drier trend, with just a slight chance of thunderstorms on both Monday and Tuesday before the sun makes a return by midweek.
