Fish hatchery to be recognized for watershed protection

— A Vermont fish hatchery located in the Lake Champlain islands is being recognized for its efforts to protect the lake and the waters that flow into it.

On Wednesday officials will recognize give the Ed Weed Fish Hatchery in South Hero the Blue certification of Lake Champlain International for its commitment to protecting the lake,

The hatchery is run by the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The Blue program of Lake Champlain International, an organization dedicated to protecting the lake, certifies residential properties as "watershed friendly, or BLUE."

To earn the certification, private property owners "follow simple, yet scientifically accepted, practices that reduce water pollution runoff starting on their properties."

The Weed fish hatchery will be the first non-residential facility in Vermont to receive the certification.
