First order of business: Honorary Mission Police Chief Alex Goodwin declares 'Big Monster Day'

There's a new police chief in town.

MISSION, KS — There's a new police chief in town.

Alexander Goodwin is a cancer survivor from England. The 10-year-old is using his new position in Mission to make people smile.

When the City Council declared Alexander an honorary police chief this week, his first order of business was one that caught some people off guard. He declared Friday Big Monster Day, and the city jumped on board.

After all, when you are chief, you make the calls. And on Friday, Chief Goodwin said we're celebrating monsters.

Ben Hadley, the other Mission police chief, made it all happen. The day was complete with cupcakes and ice cream. There was even a monster battle game and a King Kong inflatable.

Alex's mother, Maruska Goodwin, says expectations were high.

"You should have seen Alex yesterday. He was so excited preparing for the day," she said.

And the party proved to be one of a kind.

Alexander has worn his honorary badge with pride all week. So far all his officers approve of the decisions he's made.

"Well, I just love monsters and stuff, and I thought the police officers should have a bit of fun ... think of their childhood, think of all the cool things that they thought about like Godzilla, Ultraman, Zone Fighter – much more!" Alexander said.

He was granted the position thanks to his bravery he showed in his fight against cancer. Alexander beat the odds at Children's Mercy Hospital and the University of Kansas Hospital

Traveling from the UK for treatment with his mom and dad, who is an officer himself.

"I always wanted to try and be a police man," Alexander said. "But I didn't know I would make it this far to being the chief,"

And in the course of one year in Kansas City, there's no denying, Alexander has made it far.

However, Friday was a not just a celebration of monsters. Alexander put up quite a fight and is now cancer free. He's finishing up radiation and will head home in August. And many in Kansas City will miss the positivity and laughs that Alexander continues to bring.
