First Night Raleigh releases 2014 schedule

This year's First Night theme is "Experience New Year's Eve Around the World."

RALEIGH, N.C. — Big Sam's Funky Nation will lead Raleigh into 2014 during this year's annual First Night celebrations, event organizer Artsplosure announced Tuesday. 

The urban funk outfit is among more than 20 artists performing on New Year's Eve in downtown Raleigh for the celebration. 

This year's First Night theme is "Experience New Year's Eve Around the World."

The giant Ferris wheel is back, and it will be joined by a carousel and a rock star thrill ride. 

In addition to music, local improv group Comedy Worx, Chuck Davis and the African-American Dance Ensemble and comic juggler Mark Nizer will provide entertainment.

Activities start at 2 p.m. and run through midnight, when the acorn drops to signal the beginning of 2014. 

First Night Raleigh admission buttons are available in advance for $10. Children age 5 and younger are admitted free with a paying adult.

Admission prices go up on Dec. 31 to $13 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12.
