Firefighters limit community outreach to prevent spread of flu

The Durham Fire Department announced Wednesday that firefighters would not participate in community events and would limit station tours in response to the threat of the H1N1 flu virus. Chapel Hill Fire Department made a similar announcement last week.

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Fire Department announced Wednesday that firefighters would not participate in community events and would limit station tours in response to the threat of the H1N1 flu virus.

Chapel Hill Fire Department made a similar announcement last week.

Firefighters will defer community service and public outreach events until the end of flu season.

All tours of fire stations will begin with visitors washing their hands. Tours be limited to exterior areas, including equipment bays. Visitors will not be allowed inside the cabs of fire trucks, or in living quarters and administrative They will not be allowed to handle protective equipment used by firefighters such as masks and gloves.
