DURHAM, N.C. — Firefighters battled an apartment fire late Tuesday at Royal Oaks Apartments on Weymouth and Mayfair streets in Durham.

The blaze started just before 11 p.m. and burned two of the apartment's eight units, according to fire officials. The first-floor apartments were evacuated due to water damage. Authorities said they don't know what caused the fire.

No one was injured. The Red Cross helped 19 people find another place to stay overnight.

Resident Michael Crane said he heard the fire alarm and immediately went into action.

"I went around and pounded on a bunch of doors to make sure everyone was aware of what was going on (and) to make sure nobody got caught in it," he said.
