Firefighter's death under investigation

State and local law enforcement officers will increase their presence during the Fourth of July holiday as part of the Booze It & Lose It: “Operation Firecracker” campaign, authorities said Monday.

PINE LEVEL, N.C. — A Raleigh firefighter was found dead in his home early Sunday, authorities said.

George Crocker had no known medical conditions, and the cause of his death was unknown, authorities said.

Crocker, 32, was a senior firefighter with the Raleigh Fire Department and volunteer fire chief of the Pine Level Fire Department.

Other fire departments sent engines to escort Crocker's body as it was taken from his Johnston County home to Chapel Hill, where an autopsy was scheduled.
