FOUR OAKS, N.C. — A firefighter is recovering Friday after he was hurt battling a blaze in an abandoned house in Johnston County.

The fire broke out shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday at a 3,000 square-foot house on East Sanders Street that had been vacant for a couple of years.

Four Oaks Fire Chief Barry Stanley said the roof collapsed on Edward Twigg.

Twigg was at WakeMed Friday morning, where he was being kept for observation, Stanley said. He added it did not appear that the longtime firefighter suffered any serious injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
