Firefighter, 18, to be laid to rest
Friends and family will begin saying goodbye at services for an 18-year-old man who was a Pembroke firefighter and graduating high school senior Sunday.

Matthew Douglas Tramel, of Pembroke, died in a single-vehicle wreck on Big Branch Road shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, state troopers said. Tramel lost control of his 2007 Nissan, and traveled left of center, while responding to a report of a vehicle fire. The Nissan went off the left shoulder and struck a ditch and tree.
Tramel was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where he died.
Tramel would have graduated Friday from Purnell Sweet High School in Pembroke. He was a member of the Pembroke City Fire Department and Pembroke Rescue Squad. According to his obituary, he planned to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Visitation will be held at Prospect United Methodist Church in Maxton 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Sunday. A viewing will be held at Thompson's Funeral Home, 2305 Prospect Road in Pembroke, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday. His funeral will be held at Purnell Sweet High at 4 p.m. that same day.
Tramel is survived by his parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and "a host of relatives and friends," according to his obituary.
