Smithfield, N.C. — A fire Wednesday morning left a Smithfield family homeless.
Denaro Rivera said he shares the home, at 610 S. Sixth St., with three other adults, but only one person was home when the fire started at about 5 a.m. That person got out without injury, and the Red Cross put all four up in a nearby hotel.
Firefighters from Smithfield and Selma responded at about 5:30 a.m., but the fire consumed all the Christmas gifts and most of the other contents of the the house.
Investigators have not determined what caused the fire, but Rivera said he suspected that it was an electrical short.
