WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. — No customers, employees or firefighters were injured Friday afternoon when fire ripped through a popular gift shop at Wrightsville Beach.

Fire crews responded to King's on East Salisbury Street shortly after noon. A short time later, the wood-framed building erected in the 1950s was destroyed. The owner of the property said employees and customers were inside when the fire started, but nobody was hurt.

The shop is close to the well-known Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier. Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens said fire crews were lucky that the wind was not blowing toward the popular wood pier at the time of the fire.

The property owner told WRAL News the building was not insured.

No information about the cause of the fire has been released.
